Arunachal girl scales Everest twice in 10 days
ITANAGAR: A girl from Arunachal Pradesh created history by climbing Mt Everest twice in 10 days and also became the first woman mountaineer in the world to achieve the feat twice in the same season. Anshu Jamsenpa,a 32-year-old mother of two children,unfurled the Tricolour and an Arunachal logo at the summit of the 29,035 feet peak on Saturday at 5.05 am local time,official sources said here on Sunday. She had earlier been on the top of the world on May 12. Anshu hails from West Kameng district.
Godhra train burning convicts file appeals
AHMEDABAD: The 31 accused,convicted by the trial court in the 2002 Godhra train burning case,have filed appeals before the Gujarat High Court. On March 1 this year,a special trial court here convicted 31 persons and acquitted 63 in connection with the burning of S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station in 2002,wherein 59 people died. Hearing on these appeals is likely to be taken up after the summer vacation,Special Public Prosecutor J M Panchal said.
Congress leader killed in UP road accident
BARABANKI: A senior Congress leader was on Sunday killed and his driver seriously injured in a road accident in Ram Snehi ghat area of the district,the police said. Virendra Nath 65,who was state vice-president of the Congress,was killed when the car he was travelling in was involved in a collision with a truck near Barela village on Sunday morning,they said. Virendras driver Tulsiram was injured and was admitted to the hospital where his condition was stated to be serious.
27 Assam cops chargesheeted in recruitment scandal
GUWAHATI: The CBI has chargesheeted 27 Assam Police officials,including three retired IPS officers,for their alleged involvement in the multi-crore rupees scandal in the appointment of constables in the 10th Assam Police Battalion. CBI sources said here on Sunday the chargesheet was filed earlier this week for anomalies found in 2007 in the appointment procedures. It is also alleged that at least Rs 19 crore were siphoned off from government treasury in fake appointments from 2001 to 2006.
Bandit Queen writer Mala Sen dies at 64
MUMBAI: Mala Sen,writer of Indias Bandit Queen and Death by Fire,died on Saturday at Tata Memorial Hospital here. The author,64,was suffering from oesophageal cancer. She was admitted to the hospital for more than a month. Sen researched and wrote Indias Bandit Queen,the true life of Phoolan Devi,which was later used as the basis for a film directed by Shekhar Kapur. The success of this first book led her to research and write Death by Fire,an account of dowry deaths,female infanticide and cases of institutional and fatal gender-prejudice in India.
Sanskrit an option for teacher eligibility test
NEW DELHI: The CBSE has decided that candidates appearing for Central Teacher Eligibility Test-2011 can also opt for Sanskrit as one of their options in languages. The candidates wishing to opt for Sanskrit as one of the languages in Paper I and/or Paper II may also apply for CTET-2011 from May 23,2011 to May 28,2011 by making online application on CBSE website http://www.cbse.nic.in. Candidates are required to take printout of the computer generated confirmation page after successful submission of data. The CTET-2011 will be conducted by CBSE on June 26.
Bodies of two minor boys found in car
AHMEDABAD: Bodies of two minor boys,who were reportedly missing,were found in a car at Indroda village of Gandhinagar district,the police said on Sunday. Five-year-old Umang Nai and four-year-old Jaydeep Nai were missing since Saturday morning. Their bodies were found on Saturday night inside an abandoned car,the police said. Their clothes were wet,and there was little sand in the boys hair,they added.
