Jnaneswari: Two more arrested
KOLKATA: Two persons,carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on their head,were on Sunday arrested by the CBI in connection with the Jnaneswari Express derailment case,taking to 12 the total number of accused nabbed in connection with the disaster. Those who have been arrested are identified as Altaf Hossain Saiyed,a resident of Modabandh in Jhargram,and Tapan Mahato,a resident of Akhrasole in the same district.
Maoists blow up school building,2 held
RANCHI: Maoists blew up a school building while two of their hardcore members were arrested with arms in Jharkhand,police said on Sunday. Armed Maoists went to Kanda village in Palamau and rigged the school building with explosives around 11:30 pm on Saturday night. In another major catch,the security forces arrested Ulas Majhi with weapons at Harsha village in Hazaribagh.
Andhra Maoist arrested in Jharkhand
BOKARO: A top Maoist leader belonging to Andhra Pradesh was arrested from here on Sunday,police said. Acting on a tip-off,police arrested Narasimha Reddy at Upper Ghat in Gomia area,Superintendent of Police Saket Kumar Singh said. A laptop and some documents were seized from him,he said.
Naqvi arrested in Rampur,gets bail
RAMPUR: BJP MP Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi along with 19 party activists was arrested here after a local court rejected their bail plea in a case of breach of prohibitory orders and unlawful assembly during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. They were,however,freed five hours later after being granted bail by Acting District Judge Gopal Shankar Pathak. Naqvi and the BJP activists had on Saturday surrendered before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate praying for bail but their application was rejected and they were sent to judicial custody.
Woman gets life for killing daughters
KENDRAPARA ORISSA: A 28-year-old woman,Malati Das,who killed both her daughters out of a superstitious obsession in 2008,has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court here. Awarding the sentence,the District and Sessions Judge of Kendrapara yesterday observed 8220;its a rarest of rare case. She failed to have male child. She was obsessed with the superstition that failure to have son does not lead to reincarnation or rebirth,8221; the court ruled.
German couple among four killed in accident
ALAPUZHA KERALA: A German tourist couple and two others were on Sunday killed when their car was hit by a train at an unmanned level crossing in the district. The mishap occurred when the car driver tried to cross the rail track while the Chennai-Alapuzha express was approaching. The couple was identified as Manfred 54 and Katherin 47. Car driver Antony alias Thankachan 30 and Shine 30,a female tourist guide of the resort where they were staying at,were also killed in the accident.
