24 dead as trolley falls into gorge

Sitapur UP: At least 24 people were killed and 22 injured,some critically,when a tractor-trolley in which they were travelling,fell into a gorge in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh,the police said on Tuesday. The accident happened on Monday night at Pisawan near Bargawa village. Twelve persons died on the spot and an equal number succumbed to injuries in hospitals on Tuesday. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families.

Presidential probe into AMU V-C charges

New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil,in her capacity as Visitor of Aligarh Muslim University,has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of financial irregularities against its V-C P K Abdul Aziz and other top officials. The new inquiry committee has been asked to file its report within two months. The government order said the committee has been asked to look into the allegations made against Aziz by few members of the varsitys Executive Council,the AMU Old Boys Alumni Association and the non-teaching employees.

IITs conduct first online GATE

New Delhi: IITs successfully conducted the first online Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering GATE 2010 for two out of 21 papers on Monday. Examinations in Textile Engineering and Fiber Science,and Mining Engineering were conducted across 8 cities over two shifts.

Bofors: Plea against Hinduja brothers in SC

New Delhi: A plea was moved in the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking early hearing of the petition challenging the Delhi High Court verdict quashing criminal charges against the Hinduja brothers in the Bofors case. The application filed by advocate Ajay Agrawal said it has almost been five years since the appeal was admitted by the apex court. The application is likely to be listed on Wednesday before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan.

Paternity suit: Tiwari gets more time

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday gave one weeks more time to Congress politician and former Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari to file his reply on a paternity suit filed by a person claiming to be his biological son. A Bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah granted more time to 84-year-old Tiwari as he failed to respond to courts notice of January 8. The court listed the matter for further hearing on March 11.

Russian director wins documentary award

Mumbai: Russian director Alexander Gutmans August 17 won the Golden Conch for the Best Documentary. The Spell directed by Umesh Kulkarni was declared the best fiction film at the 11th Mumbai International Film Festival of Documentary,Animation and Short Films,which ended here on Tuesday.
