Order reserved on contempt notice to advocate Bhushan

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its order on the maintainability of a notice issued for taking suo motu contempt action against noted advocate Prashant Bhushan for allegedly casting aspersions on Justice S H Kapadia,who is the Chief Justice-in-waiting,and previous Chief Justices of India. A three-judge Bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir decided to pronounce a detailed order on July 14. This was after Bhushan questioned the maintainability of the notice as well as the contempt petition against him for his alleged remarks in a magazine.

Indore raid unearths Rs 2-crore assets

INDORE: Lokayukta sleuths have recovered assets worth Rs 2 crore during a raid at the residence of an assistant commercial tax officer,officials said on Tuesday. A team of Lokayukta Special Police Establishment raided Bhim Singh Thakurs residence at Anand Nagar here on Monday and unearthed assets including Rs 1.30 lakh in cash,jewellery worth Rs 14 lakh,Rs 28 lakh worth belongings,Rs 21.50 lakh bank accounts and Rs 5 lakh premium receipt of different insurance policies from his place.

Former RJD MLA convicted of murder

BIHARSHARIF: A Bihar court on Tuesday convicted former RJD MLA Nausadul Navi alias Pappu Khan and two others in connection with a murder case here in Bihars Nalanda district. Fast-track court judge B N Yadav found Pappu Khan,Gulrej and Gulfam guilty of killing one Mohammed Monabar at Chajju Mohalla in the town on October 16,2005. The court fixed March 30 to decide the quantum of punishment.

    

Orissa wage earner dies of starvation

JAJPUR: The death of a daily wage earner,who was suffering from TB,in Jajpur district has triggered allegation that he had died due to starvation. Madan Das 41,who hailed from Daitary area of neighbouring Keonjhar district,was working as a daily wage earner in Kuakhia Bazar for the past seven years. Kalandi Kantha,a social worker,on Tuesday alleged that Das died on Monday going without food for three days and staying under a tree after he was taken out of a hospital as his teenaged daughter could not afford medical expenses.

Swami Nityananda out of hospital

BANGALORE: Controversial self-styled godman Nityananda Swami,arrested on rape and other charges,was discharged from a hospital on Tuesday,a day after he was admitted following complaints of severe chest pain. Nityananda,who was taken to the government-run Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology on Monday night,underwent a number of tests,including ECO and ECG,Hospital Director Dr C Manjunath said.
