AMU teachers for Azad as Chancellor

Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University Staff Teachers Association has decided to propose the name of Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for the post of Chancellor of the University. This was stated here on Thursday by the Secretary of the Association,Jamshed Siddiqui,at a function in honour of Azad. The Associations stand came ahead of the annual general meeting of the AMU court,the universitys highest governing body,here on Sunday.

Geetha Johri moves SC

New Delhi: Rajkot Police Commissioner Geetha Johri on Thursday moved the Supreme Court to expunge adverse remarks made by the apex court about her conduct as a Special Investigation Team member probing the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case. The court judgment on January 12,while transferring the case to the CBI,had criticised Johri for walking out of the investigation. The remarks have brought a cloud on Johris status as convenor of the SIT investigating 2002 riot cases.

Stay on Amars arrest till March 12

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court has extended till March 12 the stay on the arrest of Amar Singh in connection with an FIR lodged against him in Kanpur. The order was passed by a Division Bench comprising Justices Imtiyaz Murtaza and N A Moonis on the writ petition of Singh,who had on December 5,2009,obtained a stay on his arrest in connection with the FIR lodged by Shivakant Tripathi,who had alleged that as the Chairman of UP Development Corporation Singh had embezzled crores of rupees.
