Danish court may decide on Davy extradition today
NEW DELHI: A Danish court is likely to pronounce its verdict on the extradition of Niels Holck alias Kim Davy to India,wanted for Purulia arms drop case,on Thursday. Davy is contesting the Danish governments April 2010 order for his extradition. Davy is not contesting evidence,or the investigation done by the CBI. Rather,on several occasions,he has largely admitted to his role in Purulia arms case, said CBI officials.
Bhupen Hazarika ill,admitted to ICU
Guwahati: Noted singer,musician,lyricist and filmmaker Bhupen Hazarika was admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai late on Tuesday night following complaints of acute respiratory problems. An Assam government official in Mumbai said Hazarika was under observation at an ICU. Quoting doctors,he said the 85-year old had recovered well and was likely to be released in a couple of days.
Lawyer challenges CBI RTI exemption
NEW DELHI: Challenging the Centres move to exempt the CBI,the NIA and the National Intelligence Grid Natgrid from the purview of the RTI Act,a lawyer filed a petition in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday and sought an order to quash the decision. Advocate Sitab Ali Chaudhary said: The decision is against the principles of transparency and accountability and the principles of performance with efficiency without corruption in governance and in the functioning of public offices. The petition is likely to be heard on July 6.
DRI says cancel Walia bail,HC asks why
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence DRI to explain why should it cancel the bail of Sumit Walia,the alleged kingpin of luxury cars import scam,who is also accused of duty evasion to the tune of Rs 400 crore. The court posted the matter for further hearing on July 29.
TISS rape: HC rejects appeal on acquittal
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed the state governments appeal seeking the reversal of the trial courts order acquitting six students accused of raping a US national studying at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences TISS in 2009. The six were acquitted on October 6,2010. Earlier this year,the state filed an appeal against the order before the High Court.
Cops on trail,militant kills self in mosque
SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police claimed on Wednesday that a militant committed suicide in a mosque in Sopore after CRPF men chased him. Tariq Ahmad Khuroo alias Junaid,a resident of Sopores Kralteng neighbourhood,a police spokesman said,was actively involved in militancy-related incidents and stone-pelting cases.

CHENNAI: The AIADMK has chosen senior journalist A William Rabi Bernard to replace K V Ramalingam in Rajya Sabha. The election will be held on July 22. Ramalingam resigned from Rajya Sabha after he won the Assembly polls and was inducted into the J Jayalalithaa cabinet. Bernard,51,has been associated with cable television for several years.
