The title of the film Bedroom is a misnomer. Though it has several adult themes,it doesn’t focus only on sleazy sex scenes. Rather it concentrates on the sexual conflicts in three young couples who live within layers of relationships — conventional,post-modern and antique. Antique because the lives of the three couples are unwittingly threaded together by Tanisha (Tanushree) who belongs to the world’s oldest profession. She is a sex worker who attends acting workshops and dreams of buying a pair of fancy,red,high-heeled shoes.

The film begins on the wedding day of Anando (Abir Chatterjee) and his rich girlfriend Priyanka (Paoli Dam). Anando’s friend Joy (Rahul),a failed actor who is barely able to makes ends meet by conducting acting workshops, has a complex,four-year live-in relationship with Ritwika (Parno Mitra),a successful professional photographer who shoots portfolios. Another friend Dev (Rudraneel) is a successful film actor who doesn’t believe in love or marriage and tries to seek satisfaction from one-night stands. He finds a like-minded mate in Ipsita (Ushasie) a journalist who comes to interview him. Despite talking to each other without any inhibitions, they shy away from expressing their true feelings and sadly retreat to their lonely, cocooned worlds. The film finally ends with Joy and Ritwika tying the knot. But that doesn’t stop them from having affairs. So Joy has a gala time with Tanisha while Ritwika has a one-night stand with a model (Anubrata).

Rupam Islam has composed the musical score and also sung a couple of songs. Director-writer Mainak Bhaumik aims to present to his audience, the mutative state of man-woman relationships in today’s fast world where no one is sure of what he or she wants from his/her respective partner. In the film,Tanisha is the only person who knows what she wants.

Top marks go to the entire cast with a special pat on the back for Tanushree who shocks you with her make-up,grunge hairdo and simpering expression with very few dialogues. Biswanath Ghosh as Dev’s secretary and Anubrata as Sunny are spontaneous. However, there are quite a few loopholes in the movie. Dev walking around freely to frequent cafeterias and street side tea corners without being mobbed or chased by the paparazzi is strange. Anando losing his job for not supplying his lecherous boss with girls and then getting it back when he does the needful is also unacceptable. The cinematography is slick.

The movie boasts of good production values. The closing scene where you see the pair of red high-heeled shoes adorning the feet of someone else stays with you long after you leave the theatre.

RATINGS : Three stars for direction, acting and music.
