A gang of unidentified thieves took away a 500-kg ATM machine from a Union Bank of India branch in Pune,in what is being described by police and bank officials as a meticulously planned pre-dawn heist on Tuesday. The ATM unit was worth Rs 3 lakh and it contained Rs 10.8 lakh cash.
A senior bank security official said the robbers possibly used rollers to load the machine in a waiting truck or van before escaping. The police suspect the gang of thieves reached the Kasarwadi branch of the bank in the garb of ATM maintenance personnel.
The theft was a carefully planned act because the ATM machine has an inbuilt alarm system, which goes off if the machine is hit, said Capt Akashdeep Chauhan,Manager security,Union Bank of India. Also, the machine is so heavy that even four-five people cannot easily lift it. I was surprised to see that there are no marks on the floor area of the ATM centre from where the machine would have been dragged. He said the thieves must have used rollers and levers.
The police said the security guard was absent from night duty and they were investigating this.
Police said the ATM machine was not fixed to the floor, which could have helped the thieves. Also,as the CCTV was inbuilt in the machine and not put up at the ATM centre, the theft was not recorded.
