The three — Palendu Shekhar Mukherjee,Vijay Kumar Arya and Varanasi Subramanium — had 17 cases, including the 2009 killing of the Rajnandgaon SP,against them and carried award of Rs 15 lakh from Andhra Pradesh and Bihar governments.

Inspector General of police (operations) K S Dwivedi said: “This is not only the biggest catch in Bihar but the second biggest at the national level after Kobad Ghandy’s arrest.” He said the three Central Committee leaders had probably gathered at Barsoi to discuss implementation of the CPI (Maoist)’s 9th Congress agenda.

The IG said the STF with help from Katihar police arrested four others Naxal leaders — North Bihar Eastern Zonal Committee members Nokhelal Choudhary and Shyamji,UU Regional Committee secretary Abhimanyu and Anirudh Ravidas, the man who sheltered these ultras at Katihar.

The three top Naxal leaders had gathered at Ganesh Tola under Barsoi police station. The STF,which had got tip-off from Andhra Pradesh police, kept a house under surveillance from April 28 to April 29.

“The three leaders first said they were NGO members and insisted on being taken to Patna for identification. We took it as some ploy and soon got Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh police help to identify them,” said IG Dwivedi.
