A day after he was replaced as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief with Gurdaspur MP Pratap Singh Bajwa, former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh indicated he doesnt agree with the choice of Bajwa.
Yesterday morning,I received a phone call from Mrs Sonia Gandhi, who told me that a new PCC chief was being appointed in my place. However,I was not told who was being appointed. Had I been asked,I would have suggested a different name than Pratap Bajwa, Amarinder told The Indian Express.
Asked whose name he would have suggested,Amarinder refused to say anything. It wont be correct for me to share that with you. All I can say is I was not consulted before the decision was taken. Had that happened,I would have suggested a different name who could lead the party at this crucial time, he said.
Sources in the AICC said among the names that were considered before Bajwa received the nod were former Punjab Finance Minister Lal Singh and Congress Working Committee member Jagmeet Singh Brar. Asked if he was disappointed with the decision to change him,Amarinder replied in the negative. Why should I be disappointed or angry? Last month,Mrs Gandhi had spoken to me and told me about the possibility of him being changed. I have no grouse. Whatever position I am given I will try to work to the best of my abilities. Right now,the main issue is to expose the misrule of the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government and prevent the Badals from destroying democracy in the state, he said.
Asked if the new PCC president could count on his support,he said,I am a loyal soldier of the party and have complete faith in the party under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi. I will abide by all decisions of the party. Pratap Bajwa has my complete support.
