AGP snaps ties with BJP

Six months short of the forthcoming state assembly elections, the Asom Gana Parishad AGP tonight decided to severe its alliance with the BJP

Six months short of the forthcoming state assembly elections, the Asom Gana Parishad AGP tonight decided to severe its alliance with the BJP and instead work hand-in-hand with other regional parties of the state to oust the Congress in 2011.

A decision to this effect was taken at the general house of the regional party that ended here on Monday night after a marathon eight hours of discussion that also constituted the election committee of the Asom Gana Parishad to draw up its poll strategy for next year.

The Assembly election in Assam is due in April next year.

The general house of the AGP decided to end its relations with the BJP and preferred joining hands with smaller regional parties of the state in the forthcoming assembly elections, Atul Bora, spokesman of the AGP told The Indian Express on Monday night.

The end of AGPs honeymoon with the saffron party comes close on heels of BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi asking his partymen to get prepared to fight the Assam Assembly elections on their own.
