Amidst the rush to woo Muslims by all parties,a total of 69 Muslim candidates won the Assembly elections this time,the highest since independence. In 2007 elections,56 Muslims candidates were successful in reaching the Assembly.
Out of the 69 Muslim candidates who won,43 belong to the SP. The party had fielded 78 Muslim candidates. The BSP,which gave tickets to 85 Muslim candidates,could get 16 of them elected.
The Assembly elections also saw several prominent Muslim candidates losing. Mohd Umar,son-in-law of Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari,lost from Behat in Saharanpur district. He contested on SP ticket. Imran Masood,nephew of Congress leader Rasheed Masood,lost from Nakud seat in Sahranpur. In fact,Muslim-dominateSaharanpur failed to send any Muslim MLA to the Assembly.
Haji Yaqoob Qureshi,who contested on RLD ticket from Sardhana,and his brother Haji Yousuf Qureshi who contested on Congress from Meerut Cantt,also lost the elections.
Among prominent Muslim winners,SPs stalwart Azam Khan won from Rampur by a margin of 63,269 votes. Chief of Peace Party Mohd Ayub won from Khalilabad.
