The revelry of a group of villagers of Uttar Harishpur at Udaynarayanpur block of Howrah district during Kali puja turned to grief and mourning as lightning struck on Sunday afternoon,killing 10 and injuring 16.
Two of those killed are women. The condition of four is said to be critical. Most of the victims were returning home after immersing the idol.
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those who died and has promised to bear the medical expenses of those who are injured.
The injured were rushed to Udanarayanpur state general hospital. Four were sent to various Kolkata hospitals.
We started rescue operations quickly and arranged for hospitalisation of injured, said Sanghamitra Ghosh,Howrah District Magistrate. Railway Minister Mukul Roy and state Agricultural Marketing Minister Arup Roy have reached the spot to supervise relief work.
Lightning strikes kill 17 in Andhra
Hyderabad: As many as 17 persons died in different districts of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday after being struck by lightning.
The highest number of 10 deaths were reported from Guntur district and two deaths each in Khammam,Warangal and Prakasam,state Disaster Management Commissioner T Radha told PTI on Sunday.
One more person died due to lightning elsewhere in the state. Different parts of Andhra Pradesh have experienced squall and rain since Saturday.
