The West Bengal government on Monday constituted a three-member committee to probe into the February 15 Maoist attack on the Silda Eastern Frontier Rifles camp,in which 24 personnel were killed.

The committee will see in what condition the attack was launched and whether there was any negligence on the part of any officer, said Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen,who is in the committee. The other two members are ADG CID Raj Kanojia and IG Western Range Kuldip Singh. The committee has been given two months to submit its report. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had earlier said committee will probe and fix responsibility.

DGP Bhupinder Singh is not in the committee. When asked,Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti said,It is the governments prerogative to decide who will be on the committee or not.

The Home Secretary and the DGP have been at loggerheads since the attack on the camp. While the Home Secretary said the government had prior inputs regarding the attack, the DGP denied it.

Top police officials, meanwhile, hinted at what could be the first detention in connection with the attack. We have picked up one person from Belpahari. But for investigations sake, his name cannot be divulged, said DGP Singh.

According to a senior police official, this person is an armed squad member of the Belpahari squad led by Madan Mahato. We have been interrogating him since Saturday and from him we have got information about the attack. This person was assigned the job of planting land mines on three approach roads to the Silda camp, said the official.

Three squads were engaged to launch the attack. The main attacker was the Lalgarh squad led by Vikash, said the official, who did not want to be named.
