New Delhi, November 4: The annual general body meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI on November 6 will decide the fate of Madan Lal8217;s one-year contract as coach of the Indian team. The 44-year-old spoke to Indian Express after an impromptu meeting at the Ferozeshah Kotla this weekend.
Excerpts:
Q: How have you handled the pressure as India8217;s cricket coach? Is it any different to the time when you played for the country?
A: The pressure has been much more as coach, than as player. As coach, you are individually responsible for the team8217;s performance. When I was playing for the country, the pressure was not of this nature8230; then, it was a kind of collective responsibility.
But then, I have learnt a lot too this year. I feel I can handle any side now. I have gained in experience. I have a lot of new ideas8230; in tactics, on how to improve upon the fielding, etc.
Q: How do you visualise the Indian team of the future?
A: The team is a young, talented side. They have performed well and the entry of youngsters is a good sign. Things should settle down after the return of Srinath, Kumble and Prasad.
Still, we are looking for a capable all-rounder who can bat at the No 7 or No 8 slot. Also, a wicketkeeper who can get runs.
Q: During the Pakistan tour, the Indian team manager had spoken about a rotation policy, whereby the seniors will be rested for low-key matches to give youngsters a chance8230;
A: This rotation policy, as such, is very difficult to implement. For one, international competition is so stiff that it is difficult to judge which match to rest the players. Again, it is not easy for the coach or the captain to ask a player who has been performing well to sit out for a match. They would naturally want to keep playing as they are doing well.
Q: With the return of Srinath and Prasad, what slot do you visualise for Debashish Mohanty and Harvinder Singh?
A: These youngsters could be retained. They would be in the action even if they are touring with the side or bowling at the nets. That would give them adequate exposure and experience. And they will get their chance depending on the situation, like when a particular match calls for an extra bowler8230;As for other youngsters, an effective India A team would be the answer. However, this India A team should get as much exposure as the senior team. They should play Tests more often. They have to put pressure on the Indian team, create competition. For example, if the senior team is playing at home, the India A can tour abroad at the same time. Only then will they be able to break into the international level easily.
Q: Coming to the Indian team, what is your opinion on Sachin Tendulkar8217;s dual role as captain and main batsman. Do you feel his captaincy has affected his batting?
A: I don8217;t think so. It8217;s a pressure game and the pressure is on Sachin because he has set high standards for himself.
If captaincy is taken away from him now, what will happen three or four years later? Would he be denied the captaincy again at a future juncture for the same reason?
Q: What about Anil Kumble? Do you think that he has a technical problem?
A: No, it is not a technical problem. He is a proven quality in Test cricket. He is just going through a bad phase which every top player always goes through. I am sure he will be back at his best soon.
Q: During your stint as coach Indian cricket has been affected by some major controversies, like the betting scandal8230;
A: I don8217;t believe these betting allegations at all. I will believe it only when I see it with my own eyes.
Q: Questions were also raised on the team management8217;s failure on the public relations during the Pakistan tour8230;
A: I believe my public relations is very good. I have never harmed anybody, and I have not spoken rudely to anyone.
Q: Would you fancy another stint as coach, now that your contract is coming up for renewal at the BCCI AGM this week?
A: I am always ready. It now depends on the Board.
Q: What if you are offered a job in any other capacity?
A: I will take up any job in Indian cricket.
