Apropos of the Express story, 8216;PM speaks: Guilty won8217;t be spared, wherever they are8217; IE, December 10, I just hope this sort of reaction comes every time any honest person is murdered by the evil forces that now infect almost every public office in India 8212; and not just when one brilliant, honest, patriotic yet innocent government functionary surprisingly from IIT is killed.

Keep this virus out

The one bastion of Indian democracy, which remained non-communal from its very inception, was the army; now that myth is about to be shattered. The chairman of the Minorities Commission, Tarlochan Singh, openly lobbied for a Sikh officer to be the next chief of the army staff on the grounds that no Sikh has been appointed to that position ever since Independence. We sincerely hope that, the government will not give in to this kind of manipulation, which will spell the doom of an apolitical and non-communal fighting force.

A way out on Telgi

The Telgi scam should be handed over to Justice Sri Krishna of the Supreme Court and there should be two high court judges 8212; from the Bombay High Court and Karnataka High Court 8212; to assist him. I am sure that under Justice Sri Krishna and the two other judges, all the facts would come out. The state governments should act immediately without delay as per the directions of Justice Sri Krishna and the two high court judges. The chief justice of the Bombay High Court is doing an excellent job through the SIT, but they cannot direct action against the Central and other state governments.

Power games?

Both the BJP and CongressI took credit for the privatisation the power and transport sectors in Delhi during the recent poll campaigns. But people like me are facing innumerable problems and do not find any avenues or possibilities for the redressal of our problems.

Before the privatisation of the power sector, the BJP, Congress, the private power companies and the media, assured the people that electricity rates will not go up and will only go down. But just after one year, the power rates have been increased by over 16 per cent. After privatisation, the private power companies have installed fast meters or made the existing meters run faster. Many consumers find their consumption having suddenly increased by over 50 per cent.

The problems of incorrect billing have also increased. The DERC chairman who is is supposed to check these irregularities, was reported to be currying favours from the private companies. In order to lull the people into 8216;8216;feel good8217;8217; factor before the elections, private power companies have deceptively resorted to 8216;8216;reduced8217;8217; billing. After the elections are over, the unbilled portion of consumption will be charged at higher slab rates. Now that the elections are over, the burden of the 16 per cent increased rates will also fall on the people
