Where do you think half of India8217;s tycoons will be during the month of December, this year? In Delhi? Yes, but not for New Year, instead to celebrate a mega event called 8216;IIT 20508217;.

This will be a celebration organized by the Pan IIT trust that comprises of the all the old students of the IITs all over India, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of IITs in India. Members on the Pan IIT trust include Infosys chief, Narayana Murthy who is also chairman of the trust.

ITC chairman Yogi Deveshwar, HDFC Standard Life CEO Deepak Satwalekar, CEO and Tata Sons ED R.Gopalakrishnan among many others. 8216;IIT 20508217; will be full of pomp and show and will celebrate the contributions of the IIT community to nation building, science, engineering and business. The President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will inaugurate it along with the Prime Minister.

The idea for this event was taken from a get together of the IIT alumni from across the world held in the US in January, which was a very successful event and generated a tremendous response. But this is not the only reason for them to celebrate, recently the tycoons on the trust were a disturbed lot when the government decided to control the flow of funds being contributed by them towards the Bharat Shikha Kosh.

The tycoons had even decided to stop sending funds altogether if the government did not change its decision. Thus alarmed by this the ever vigilant Murli Manohar Joshi quickly changed this approach and assured them that it would not actually control but only help channelise donations from the IIT alumni.

This obviously has taught the a lesson that one should never mess with a tycoon and when there are a bunch of them then it8217;s strictly a big No No!

Not in cruise control

No the Silverjet is not a boardroom in the sky but a catamaran that is owned by Bengals pride at one time 8212; the consulting company DCPL which has been sailing on troubled waters and infact has been grounded for the last year.

London based steel magnate L.N. Mittal is one of the contenders for the Silverjet which is up for sale and word has it that his technicians have already assessed the condition of the vessel. It is learnt however that the steel major has no intentions of using the catarmaran for any commercial purposes but to entertain senior managers of the group based in more than 12 countries.

Another contender for the Silverjet is Sahara India who have plans to turn it into an entertainment liner, discos etc. What with the huge Sahara resort coming up in the Sunderbans, the Silverjet will be a good way to lure tourists into becoming buyers via a cruise. Whether it is the Mittals or the Sahara group, the Silverjet will not come cheap. But this is one cruise that8217;s clearly sailed out of control.

Soapy future

Azim Premji is constantly reinventing his company. Most people are quite surprised with his brand new efforts to make every employee learn the tricks of customer interfacing. But, don8217;t forget that Premji started out with a company that sold edible oil.

The tycoon who hasn8217;t forgotten the FMCG business, recently offered a higher price than that earlier offered to acquire Chandrika soaps. Strangely, the Kerala-based Chandrika has given over only its marketing rights to Wipro Ltd and that too in certain cities only. This is not new territory for Premji who8217;s Wipro Consumer Care 038; Lighting has a base in retail markets. He also owns Santoor soap, which happens to be the leading brand in the markets of Andhra Pradesh, among others.

Now the tycoon has hopes of establishing a strong bond with the 63-year-old Chandrika brand, through this deal. Meanwhile the latter has hopes to maintain and grow its brand image in the Ayurvedic market and boost its sales through Wipro. Taking into consideration their respective strengths when put together as in this case, they make a deadly combination, that will lead them laughing all the way to the bank.
