War widows honoured on Martyrs8217; Day

PANCHKULA, Sept 23: quot;We should be proud of those who have laid down their lives for the country and the purpose of observing Martyrs8217; Day is to revive the feeling of patriotism,quot; said Ambala Commissioner Chander Singh, during a special programme organised on Martyrs8217; Day at Yavanika open air theatre here, today.

The day is observed throughout the state in the memory of Rao Tula Ram, who belonged to Rewari and sacrificed his life in 1857 in the course of the freedom struggle.

Recalling the sacrifices of Kargil martyrs, the Commissioner, who was the chief guest at the function, said all citizens must contribute generously to the Kargil Relief Fund to help the victims8217; families.

War widows were also honoured on the occasion and were given clocks and ceiling fans. The widows included Raj Kumari, Savitri Devi and Bachni, all from Panchkula, Harbans Kaur of Talauli, Beena Devi of Devi Nagar and Shanti Devi, Savitri Devi and Sito, all from Pinjore.

The parents of Flying Officer G.S. Dhindsa were also honoured with Rs 10 lakh. The fathers of Joy Lal and Sandeep Sagar were also present on the occasion.

Earlier in the afternoon, a students8217; rally was flagged off by Commissioner8217;s wife Krishna Singh. The schools which participated in the rally and presented patriotic songs on the occasion included Bhavan Vidyalaya, Jainendra Gurukul Public School, DC Model School. A bhajan was also presented by the District Public Relations Department.

Others who were present on the occasion included Deputy Commissioner Vivek Joshi, Superintendent of Police Alok Mittal, ADC Anurag Aggarwal and SDM Rajbir Singh.
