PUNE, NOV 1: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation PCMC is looking for an alternative site to shift the garbage depot from its present location at Moshi as the garbage depot is turning out to be a hindrance to smooth movement of air traffic.

The garbage depot is likely to be shifted in a couple of months after a suitable location is finalised, according to Additional Municipal Commissioner R B Konde.

Divisional Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal had recently convened a meeting at which directives were given to the PCMC authorities for shifting the Moshi garbage depot. Although no specific deadline has been given for shifting the depot, the PCMC has begun a search for a suitable site on the outskirts of Pimpri-Chinchwad. The State Government has also assured that it will assist the PCMC in alloting suitable site for the garbage depot.

The Khadki Cantonment Board KCB too has been directed to stop dumping its garbage in the Pimpri-Chinchwad limits. The KCB has been dumping its garbage at Kasarwadi since past ten years. However, this site too has become a problem for air traffic as it attracts birds. The KCB has reportedly been asked to tie-up with the Pune Municipal Corporation to dispose of the garbage.

One of the sites identified for the PCMC garbage depot is near Nighoj village near Chakan. Three other sites are also being considered. Around 300 tonnes of garbage is generated from Pimpri-Chinchwad everyday and this is dumped at the Moshi garbage depot. For two years, the PCMC has started major vermiculture projects in association with hoteliers. Waste from vegetable markets is also used in the vermiculture projects by which nearly 40 tonnes of garbage is disposed in an eco-friendly way.

Konde said that the PCMC will be focusing on initiating small vermicomposting projects in each of the four ward level offices so that the quantity of garbage disposed at the depot is lessened.
