Anil Kumble has now become the 10th-highest Test wicket-taker after claiming 8-141 on Monday. He is now on 378 from 81 Tests. Among current players, only Shane Warne (491), Muttiah Muralitharan (485) and Glenn McGrath (430) are ahead of him.

Kumble also became the third Indian bowler to take eight wickets in an innings in an away Test. Erapalli Prasanna (8-76 v New Zealand, Auckland, 1975-76) and Kapil Dev (8-85 v Pakistan, Lahore, 1982-83 and 8-106 v Australia, Adelaide, 1985-86) have done it before.

Simon Katich and Jason Gillespie set a new record for the eighth wicket for Australia against India by putting on 117. They beat Thomas Veivers and Graham McKenzie’s 73 at Madras in 1964-65.

Sachin Tendulkar became the fourth Indian batsman to score more than 300 runs in a Test match.

This was the first time India didn’t enforce the follow-on against Australia. The last time India did not enforce the follow-on was against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 1999-2000. New Zealand were all out for 308 runs in reply to India’s 583 for seven declared.
