Waiting for Singh

.

8226; In his one year of premiership, Manmohan Singh has yet to strike a blow for moral probity. So far his track record has been siding with the wrongdoers, be it in Goa or Jharkhand, Soren or now Laloo.

Staying power

8226; I agree with Coomi Kapoor in 8216;A year of living decorously8217; IE, May 11 that Manmohan Singh has acquitted himself well and proved to be a highly capable prime minister. His humility and apolitical style has endeared him to the people. His rule is a refreshing break from the politicians. Despite the BJP disrupting Parliament and abusing him in the hope that the UPA would collapse, Manmohan has proved he is here to stay. If he stays for 5 years, rest assured that the BJP and NDA will sit on the opposition benches i.e. if they end their perpetual boycott for the next two decades. That8217;s bad news for L.K. Advani.

Come on, be bold

8226; This is apropos of 8216;Very feeble reform8217; IE, May 3. The Muslim Personal Law Board has not fully grappled with the problem of triple talaq. Many Muslim countries, including Pakistan, have put so many obstacles in the practice of triple talaq that the men have to perforce go for the 8216;8216;singles talaq8217;8217; talaq repeated at monthly intervals twice. Why could the board not go for similar bold measures? A leadership which cannot prevail upon the community to prefer the procedure for talaq as given in the Quran rather than continue with a practice that started only after the time of the Prophet, should rethink its relevance.

Danger ahead

8226; Were there not any more issues left for our politicians like Laloo Prasad Yadav that now they have started taking the help of bureaucrats to malign the name of a constitutional body like the Election Commission? In this competitive grandstanding, the very guardian of our democracy is in danger.

Keep it up!

8226; Apropos of 8216;4 years later, German rape victim returns to nail 2 accused8217; IE, May 11, I want to congratulate the police department on this success. I hope they will keep up the tradition of aggressive law enforcement.

No more freebies

8226; The Maharashtra government8217;s decision to dispense with the 8220;free power8221; scheme floated during the last Assembly election to garner farmer-votes makes one happy. The political establishment has been compelled to retreat at least on one of its populist measures. The Maharashtra Chief Minister has termed it as a decision 8220;forced by the circumstances8221; and has revealed that the cabinet has reached a consensus not to give anything 8220;free8221; in future. One wishes such good sense would prevail upon all those who believe in liberal distribution of freebies while in power at the cost of country8217;s economy and taxpayers8217; money.
