
The Justice R S Pathak inquiry authority into the Paul Volcker findings in the Iraq oil-for-food scandal, will be extended by another six months.
Justice Pathak, whose commission hasn8217;t even begun proceedings8212;its term ends on May 118212;is understood to have written to the Central government for the extension. Reason: The 8220;probe8221; has to be conducted in the US, Hannover in Germany and 8220;other8221; places.
Government sources said the terms of reference would remain the same: to probe the references pertaining to two specific contracts where beneficiaries have been listed as K. Natwar Singh and Congress party.
The power conferred on the Authority provides for tabling of the report together with the action taken in Parliament within six months and it will have powers of Civil Court for summoning witnesses, documents and receiving evidence.
Senior counsel Raju Ramachandran, T R Andhiyarijuna and Dipankar Gupta are commission8217;s lawyers.
The commission will also probe whether 8220;any Indian entity or individual received any money or other consideration from, or paid any money or other consideration to, any Government, agency, company, firm or individual in connection with the purported transaction in the UN oil-for-food programme, pertaining to M/9/54 and M/10/57 contracts.8221;
