VADODARA, April 12: In a massive demolition drive, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation razed over 50 illegal structures on Monday in the Fatehgunj and Channi Jakatnaka areas. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation has also served notices to 85 traders on Dabhoi Road to remove encroachments.
The operation began from 8 am onwards when illegal constructions on the roads between Pandya Hotel and Sayaji Irons, near Alembic bridge were demolished and extended up to the Channi Jakatnaka and continued till evening.
The popular Udipi Restaurant at Fatehgunj Chaar Rasta was also razed as part of the drive. The restaurant owners, it may be recalled, have been already given an alternative site behind the Vadodara Municipal Corporation dispensary at Fatehgunj. The demolitions were undertaken as part of the road widening plans of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation.
Meanwhile, 85 traders along the Dabhoi Road stretch have been served notices by Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria to remove their illegal extensions and structures, which would be razed by the civic body if they failed to comply.
Till evening civic staff were on the job to clear the debris. According to sources, the demolitions are likely to continue near Chhani Jatatnaka and Nizampura on Tuesday.
Sources further said that some of the 85 traders have volunteered to demolish part of the structures on their own.
It may be recalled that nearly a year ago, several traders on the Waghodia Road had demolished part of the shops after being served notices. Several operating from Nizampura and Gorwa had also followed the suit.
