
VADODARA, June 11: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation will construct 1,272 houses at a cost of Rs 6.90 crore for people belonging to the economically backward strata of society.
Mayor Ratilal Desai and Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria told reporters on Thursday that the three-storyed flats would be constructed at eight different places on final plots under the town-planning schemes.
Each of the beneficiaries will get plots measuring nearly 225 square feet. at an estimated cost of Rs 46,000. While Rs 25,000 will be provided in loans, Rs 4,000 will be marked as government subsidy. The beneficiary will have to pay a monthly installment of Rs 280 for a period of 13 years.The flats will be constructed on Vasna Road, between Old Padra Road and Race Course, Subhanpura, Manjalpur, Sama and Karelibaug.
The civic chief said the VMC intended to start construction on the houses from October; work is expected to be completed within a year.
Aloria said the project had the two-fold objectives of generating employment and protecting plots reserved for the economically backward from being encroached upon.
The Standing Committee has already nodded through the administrative wing8217;s proposal. After the General Board accepts it, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation will approach the HUDCO for a loan.
Applications from people whose monthly incomes were less than Rs 2,100 would be invited through advertisements, Aloria said, adding that the applicants also should not have a plot of their own in the city.
Meanwhile, the Corporation has temporarily shelved a scheme to resettle slum-dwellers. Under a Standing Committee-approved scheme, the VMC was to resettle nearly 895 units at various places. The HUDCO had also in principle agreed to give a loan of Rs 61.02 lakh for the project.
Aloria said the decision had been taken to utilise the available space in the best possible manner. He, however, said out of these 895 units, 354 units could be accommodated on five final plots in different parts of the city.
