VADODARA, Nov 16: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation VMC has decided to carry out a feasibility report to draw water from the downstream of Narmada to the city.

The Water Works Committee on Monday passed a resolution to invite tenders from contractors for carrying out the feasibility report through advertisements.

It may be recalled that the State Government has agreed in principle to allow the VMC to carry water from Chandod to the city through the Narmada Canal. The VMC had sought water from Chandod to meet the future requirements of the city up to 2021 A.D.

Currently the city gets on an average 238 Million Litre water Daily MLD from its existing resources to cater to 14 lakh population. According to information, till 2021 A.D., the VMC will require additional 225 MLD water to cater to the needs of population which would then reach 29 lakh mark.

Although proposal has been passed by the Committee, another nod will be taken from the Standing Committee.

Under the proposed plan, the VMC plans to either dig french well or jack well and through them bring water from the Narmada Canal or any other means.

Chandod is 50 kilometer away from the city and in 1966, a primary report was prepared to bring water from the source. The then elected wing, however, decided to lay french wells in river Mahisagar. According to sources, Chandod is on a higher platform as compared to by 10 feet.

The Committee also approved a proposal to lay an overhead water tank in Sama at a cost of nearly Rs 4.24 crore which was in kept in cold storage for the past three years. This will be 18th overhead tank in the city.

Although setting up overhead tank in Sama was one of the suggestions of the Tata Consultancy Services TCS report, the work could not be executed apparently due to shortage of funds. To augment water supply in Harni area, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation HUDCO has given financial assistance for setting up an underground pump.
