The top brass at the Vadodara Municipal Corporation has decided to change the city8217;s image this year.

Though the VMC has adopted the ambitious project of making the city spic and span, an important aspect of removing plastic waste is being neglected. It has been observed that plastic bags consume the major portion of the non-degradable waste. But the rampant sale of plastic bags goes unchecked. The drives, which are at times initiated by the VMC, hardly serve any purpose

The top brass at the Vadodara Municipal Corporation has decided to change the city8217;s image this year. After initiating the Vishwamitri clean up and the Sursagar lake beautification projects, the VMC has now embraced an ambitious project to make Vadodara a clean city.

Not content with using just the machinery to keep the city clean, this time, the VMC has also decided to focus on the awareness part and the people8217;s participation by making them part of the project. But the initiative will not be limited to the VMC. Even the district collectorate has been invited to formulate the plans.

8220;The present state of affairs is because of a lack of awareness among the people and the apathy on the part of the VMC. Instead of simply cracking down on the contractors who are responsible for garbage collection and waste management, we have decided to address the root cause this time. Right from school children to Ganesh mandals, we have decided to include each and every citizen in this project,8221; said Vadodara Mayor Balkrishna Shukla.

VMC officials will develop a special presentation in which every possible aspect related to garbage will be included and will be shown to the students. 8220;For school students there will be a different presentation and for college students the approach will be different,8221; Shukla said, adding that scientific information with facts and figures about waste disposal will be included in the presentation.

For the first time, the citizens will have a garbage bin, which has two separate compartments for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. 8220;We are working on ways where people at least get an option to separate the garbage instead of just dumping it into one bin. We realised that the Ganesh mandals are the best way to convey any social message and they have agreed to join us in this noble cause,8221; he said. Besides, hoardings and banners will be placed in the city, and in the second phase of the project, penalty would be levied on the people, he added.
