Viru’s turn once more?

This is the home of the Speedblitz Blues but for the moment, it’s the base of the Men in Blue. The Indian team trained their focus back to cricket after a couple of days of relaxation, shopping and auction-watching.

For Team India, everything had started from here on this tour and the man chiefly in focus wasn’t to be seen anywhere at the ground this morning. Harbhajan Singh skipped practice but the nets went ahead in full steam.

The man to watch out for this time was Virender Sehwag. He came at the start of the tour with a bankable ODI record and a point to prove in the Tests. Towards the end of the tour, he is struggling to salvage his one-day career.

He went in to bat first in the nets with Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa as the bowlers went flat out, closely watched by Sachin Tendulkar from the sides, who sat stretching his groin and hamstring.

As Sehwag walked out of the nets, Tendulkar called him over and subtly put in a few words in his ears and the whispering conversation went on for quite some time — to stir speculations and add intrigue to the Sehwag story.

The maverick Indian opener, who was dropped for the last two matches after his inconsistent performance at the top, is expected to get a game on Sunday against Australia. It could be a decisive moment in his ODI career, which can swerve either way as of now.

With Dhoni not openly backing Sehwag like vice-captain Yuvraj Singh, it’s a clear message to get his act together or he could soon see himself subjected to further experiments with the youngsters in the team.

Sachin niggleTendulkar has a little niggle in his groin but he did pick up the bat after long stretching exercises and batted very fluently, and is expected to recover completely before the next game.

With their game still 48 hours away, today’s net session afforded every batsman, including Manoj Tiwary, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Kaarthick, Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla, to get a hit in the nets.

Dhoni ran in and bowled a bouncer that rattled Tiwary while Praveen Kumar ‘PK’ is disturbed that everyone is bowling short to him and not giving him many chance to free his arms.

The Indian team will be back for another three-hour session on Saturday. Through the evening, they watched Australia crumble again to a disciplined bowling, and Sri Lanka again go down feebly.
