Renowned sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee, along with Janab Akram Khan on the tabla, performed on the concluding day of the SPIC MACAY programme on Saturday

On the occasion of the concluding programme of SPIC MACAY Virasat 2008, renowned sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee along with Janab Akram Khan on the tabla gave an enthralling performance here today.

The trustees, faculty members, students and the supporting staff of Synetic Business School formed part of the audience at their campus in Ramgarh.

Principal of Mai Bhago College, Dr Manjeet Kaur Dhillon with the faculty and students were also present on the occasion to enjoy the musical extravaganza.

Chatterjee, from the Senia Maihar Gharana, received guidance from Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and was greatly influenced by the Dhrupad and Khayal ragas.

At the age of 31, Purbayan Chatterjee has mesmerised people across Britain, Germany, Australia, South Africa, USA, Middle East, Australia and India.

He gave his first performance at the tender age of five at the India Festival in Basel in 1982.

Over the years, he has won acclaim for his performances by way of awards including the president award in 1993, rotary award in 1995 and the Ravi Kichlu award in 1995. He has performed widely across India and is a frequent performer at the international music platform.

Janab Akram of Ajara Gharana displayed his art on the tabla at the musical show. He started his training under his great grandfather Ustad Mohamed Shafi Khan. His father, tabla maestro Ustad Hasmat Ali Khan has been an inspiration for him throughout his career.

They also played the famous Maheer raga Madhuban Mein Radhika Naache Re from the film Kohinoor on students’ demand. A musical ending, indeed.
