Following reports of widespread violence and booth capturing, mainly by its own partymen, the DMK on Sunday ordered repolling for 25 cooperatives in the first phase of elections in Tamil Nadu.

Stating that he was keeping a close watch on partymen, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi promised that those found violating the 8220;coalition dharma8221; would be punished. Earlier in the day, two senior ministers openly admitted to facing problems in the cooperative polls. Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy said partymen were not following the advice of the headquarters, but were instead causing problems by filing nominations on their own.

Later, Cooperatives Minister Ko Si Mani released the list of cooperatives for which reelections were ordered.

Mani admitted that fights had broken out in at least six places during filing of nominations and ballot papers had been torn or stolen at Neikarapatty in Dindigul district.

As many as 10,047 were elected unanimously as administrative committee members in 1,338 primary cooperative societies of the 1,921 cooperative societies for which nominations were filed. In dairy societies, the minister said results were declared for 176 cooperatives out of 177.

Elections to the Pallavan Co-operative Housing Society had to be postponed due to violence. The CITU accused the DMK of unleashing violence during Saturday8217;s polls in Chennai, leading to a rift between the CPIM and DMK.

8220;Once the Chief Minister is back from Bangalore, we will take severe action against partymen who indulged in violence,8221; said Veerasamy.
