Violence mar MP polls

A presiding officer was shot at in Lahar constituency on Thursday in Bhind district in Madhya Pradesh, where a 10 per cent voter turnout was recorded till afternoon.

The officer was shot at by unidentified persons at 8216;Dhamole Ki Madhayia8217; polling station under Ron police station area, police said, adding that he was rushed to Gwalior for treatment. The identity of the poll officer was not yet known and further details are awaited.

In a separate incident of poll-related violence, four persons were injured when Congress and BSP workers clashed over some petty issue at Khilchipur constituency, police said.

The injured were rushed to Zirapur hospital and additional forces have been deployed in the area to keep vigil.

Meanwhile, 10 per cent polling was recorded in the state since morning with urban areas recording 11-12 per cent voting, while in rural areas 10 per cent people exercised their right to franchise, state election office sources said.

Reports of EVMs being broken by some unidentified persons were received from Burhanpur, Barwani, Bhind and Datia, while dysfunctional EVMs were reported at Dhar, sources said. Polling was suspended at Surpura booth in Ater Assembly seat in Bhind for an hour due to malfunctioning of EVMs, to be resumed later.
