PUNE, April 22: Taking a stern view of flouting norms by various management institutes, the Academic Council (AC) of the University of Pune today granted conditional approval to the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Management for conducting the existing courses for the year 1998-99.
The Academic Council which was presided by Vice-Chancellor Dr Arun Nigavekar turned down the proposal of the Sinhagad Institute of Management for approval as a research centre. While expressing concern over the flouting of norms by various management institutes, the council has proposed the setting up of a steering committee to ensure the fulfillment of various criteria laid down by the University.
Prior to the AC empowering the vice-chancellor to appoint such a committee, the house witnessed a prolonged debate over the Local Inquiry Committee report of Dr P C Shejwalkar recommending the continuation of affiliation to MIT’s School of Management’s MBA, MCM and DBM courses. After much deliberation, the AC decided to grant conditional approval for a period of six months, directing the school to appoint a qualified and approved director, maintain the roster, appoint a qualified librarian and ensure payment of salaries to teaching and non-teaching staff.
The AC also decided to temporarily withdraw the item of granting approval to the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa and the Multi-Disciplinary Centre at Dharwad as places for research centres as it came under the purview of the management council. While turning down the Sinhagad Institute of Management’s proposal for approval as research centre, the Academic Council also did not grant approval to the ENT department of the Armed Forces Medical College as a PG research centre.
While the meeting initially congratulated Nigavekar on his appointment as vice-chancellor, he addressed the house on the need to usher in quality while taking stock of the constraints and pressures in the education system. We need to adopt a new strategy wherein all the Boards of Studies, Faculties and the Academic Council come together to ensure qualitative standards.
Gupte, Takwale on comeback trail
Prof Shridhar Gupte and Prof Ram Takwale, former vice-chancellors of the University of Pune are all set to make a comeback as the Academic Council meeting on Wednesday placed the proposal of conferring them with the Professor Emeritus status. While Thursday’s meeting will decide the proposal, a few members raised eyebrows over the proposed move as it did not form a part of the agenda but was placed on behalf of the university.
In fact members even wondered as to why these former V-Cs were not conferred the status during the tenure of previous V-C Dr Vasant Gowariker.
