SURAT, June 24: Tension continued to grip Vansda town, on the Navsari-Dangs border, for the second day on Wednesday, a day after people of different communities clashed over the desecration of an idol in a school. One person was arrested on Tuesday evening after vice-president of the Vansda Taluka Kelavni Mandal Gulabsingh Solanki lodged a complaint against him.

Even as he was taken into custody and charged under section 298 of the IPC, a violent mob went on the rampage, damaging at least four houses. Cross complaints were lodged by both the parties. While one accused the other of creating mischief, the other complained against their houses being damaged.

The police are on the lookout for three others reported to be involved in the mischief, while heavy police bandobast has been deployed following the incident.

Meanwhile, a bandh called by a social organisations was put off after a leaders of various communities met in the presence of District Collector Bharatbhai Joshi and District Superintendent of Police S D Vasava late on Tuesday. Joshi told Express Newsline on Wednesday that barring a few instances of stone-throwing and grappling with the police, Wednesday had been peaceful.

DSP Vasava, who is leading the patrolling in the town, said no serious offence was registered until evening. He added that the three accused, who were absconding, would be arrested soon.

Collector Bharatbhai Joshi said the situation was peaceful, but tense.
