Candidates List for BMC Election 2026: The 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will go to the polls on January 15. A total of 1,700 candidates are contesting the civic elections. Of them, 879 are women and 821 are men. The BMC is India’s largest and richest civic body. The counting of votes is scheduled for January 16.

BMC election 2017

The last civic polls in Mumbai were held in February 2017, following which the new general body of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was constituted on March 8 that year. The five-year term of the corporators ended on March 7, 2022.

Since then, the BMC has been administered by a Maharashtra government-appointed administrator (the municipal commissioner is holding that post), who is overseeing the day-to-day functioning of the country’s richest civic body.

According to PTI, the number of contestants in 2026 marks a decline of 25.27 per cent from the 2,275 candidates who fought the civic polls in February 2017. “At that time, a total of 1,190 males, 1,084 females and one transgender candidate had contested the elections,” the report said.

The PTI report stated that Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate and former city mayor Kishori Pednekar, contesting from Lower Parel (ward 199) in central Mumbai, has declared total assets of Rs 5.26 crore, a 226 per cent increase from Rs 1.61 crore in 2017.

Former deputy mayor and businessman Babubhai Bhavanji, who declared total assets of Rs 31.44 crore, up from Rs 8.23 lakh in 2017, as he had sought to contest the election from ward 192, according to PTI.

Arun Gawali’s daughter, Geeta Gawali, who is contesting from the Byculla-Agripada area (ward 212) and seeking another term, has declared assets of Rs 7.26 crore, including Rs 4.70 crore in immovable properties, compared to Rs 3.38 crore during the 2019 assembly polls, says PTI.
