VADODARA, April 29: Vadodara is one of the three cities in Gujarat selected under the Centre8217;s Urban Child Health Project to provide better health care facilities to slum dwellers.

Vadodara Municipal Corporation VMC Standing Committee chairman N V Patel told Express Newsline that in the World Bank aided project, initially it had been agreed that Vadodara would get an estimated Rs 3 crores to provide civic facilities in four years.

Surat and Ahmedabad are the other two cities selected for the project. The report has to be submitted to the State Government by May 5. The State Government in turn would forward it to the Centre.

Patel further said that apart from reviewing the role of non-governmental organisations in the health-care sector and VMC dispensaries in the slums and revamping centres, under the project, infrastructural facilities would be set up to provide better services.

Pregnant women would also be covered by the project and children immunised against various diseases. If approved, hospitals would be set up in various areas and doctors and para-medical staff appointed.

He further said that in the preliminary stage the centre has agreed to give Rs 19,69,000 for one slum unit. Each slum unit consists of 1,500 people.

The issue was discussed at Gandhinagar with Health Minister Ashok Bhatt on Wednesday. Among those present were Deputy Municipal Commissioner Administration H S Patel and Mayor Bharti Vyas.
