Criminal tries to escape
Notorious criminal Umesh Reddy, who is currently in police remand in city, had attempted to escape from police custody on Sunday night, the Karelibaug police said. Reddy, accused of at least two murders and rapes and about 10 robberies, had been brought to the city about a week ago. However, following complains of nervous disorders, he had been taken to the Government Mental Hospital. There he attempted to escape after he was allowed to answer nature8217;s call. However, three constables of the armed police force, Pratap Nagar, chased him and caught him.

Inaugurated
The fourth branch of the Bank of Maharashtra was recently inaugurated by District Collector Anil Mukim. With this the bank now has 33 branches in the state. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman and Managing Director of the bank T S Raghavan said that the bank would be adding four more branches in the city shortly. Among others, Nayan Mongia, Vice Chancellor of M S University, Padma Ramchandran and A T Halsigar, Assistant General Manager of the bank in the state were present on the occasion.

Committee meet
A committee to review the acquisition of land cases will be held at the Collector8217;s office on May 16. The monthly meeting will be chaired by the collector at 2.30 pm.

Caught copying
As many as four cases of malpractice were detected during the first year commerce and science examinations of the M S University here on Monday. The students were suspended after they were caught copying from pamphlets.

BJP convention
The city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP will organise a Parivartan convention here on May 24. This was decided at the city unit8217;s executive committee meeting held here on Monday under the chairmanship of city Unit Chief Bhupendra Lakhawala. In his address, Lakhawala stressed the need to make citizens aware of various government schemes.

Lecture delivered
An open public lecture on Marketing A Challenging Proposition8217;, organised by the Baroda Junior Chamber, was held recently at the Vasvik Hall, Race Course. In his speech, renowned management consultant N J Kikani said that organisations could be successful only when they became proactive.

Highlighting the role of marketing in the present scenario, he said that marketing had to extend its scope beyond the marketing department to all the functional areas of an organisation.

Human rights
The Gujarat People8217;s Union for Civil Liberties has praised the State government8217;s acknowledgement of the lapse in forming a State Human Rights Commission. In a letter to Speaker Dhirubhai Shah, PUCL president Tulsi Boda and Secretary Dhiru Mistry expressed satisfaction at the concern shown by Shah about forming a human rights commission in the state at a seminar in held in Ahmedabad.
