Highway traffic jam
Vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear on the national highway between Anand and Vasad on Wednesday night after several trees fell on to the road following heavy rains. Police sources said there was a serpentine queue on the highway for more than two hours, while the authorities tried to remove the barricades on a war-footing. Traffic was expected to be restored by 11 p.m.
Tele-conferencing
The District Rural Development Agency will on Thursday hold an informative tele-conferencing programme on `Cancer’ for the general public, medical students and professionals in its office at Shripadnagar, Karelibaug at 10 am. Various telephonic queries from all over the State will be answered by an experts’ team of the Gujarat Cancer Research and Treatment Institute, Ahmedabad.
BoB awards
The Bank of Baroda presented Honesty and Alertness Awards to 52 of its employees from all over the country on Wednesday. The employees were presented with shields and certificates at a cultural programme organised at the Gandhinagar Gruh on the eve of BoB’s second annual general meet being convened in the city.
Office-bearers
Organising Secretary of the All-India Engineering Employees Union, Line Staff & Group D, Gujarat Circle, Narendra Shukla announced the names of office-bearers of AIEEU’s Miyagam-Karjan branch for 1998-99 on Wednesday. F S Ansari, M L Baria, A N Hussain, R R Tiwari, A S Khokhar and S S Maurya have been appointed president, vice-president, branch secretary, treasurer, organising secretary and auditor, respectively.
Reinstatement
Labour court judge M C Vora has ordered Petrofils Co-operative Company Limited to reinstate a worker with backwages and continuity of service. The court has ordered Petrofils to pay 60 per cent of his backwages and in case of default, the company will have to pay the wages with 18 percent interest. The worker, a member of the Vadodara Zilla General Kamdar Union, affiliated to CITU, was sacked in 1983 as he had sought bonus claiming permanency. His counsel Nagin Patel had contended that the worker was permanent but was assigned contract work.
