
Mumbai, May 16: Uzma Khan maintained her unbeaten record against Radhika Tulpule while claiming the final of the Rs 1,00,000 All India Prize Money Women8217;s tennis tournament at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana courts today.
The top seed and National champion won 7-5, 6-3 to pocket the Mumbai Hard Court title and said that being the favourite was no pressure at all. 8220;They all try to beat me but they can8217;t beat me,8221; she said after the match that lasted an hour and 15 minutes.
The 16-year-old Radhika said the many unforced errors she committed went against her. 8220;She Uzma hits the ball very hard, no one has hit so hard against me,8221; said Radhika. 8220;The pace of the match was a bit too much for me to handle.8221;
The Pune girl, who beat second seed Janaki Krishnamoorthy in the semi-finals yesterday, was done in by the five double faults she committed, despite having a high percentage of first serves. And it was Uzma who had the larger number of unforced errors and, importantly, winners.
Two double faults in theseventh game by Radhika, with scores even at 3-3, gave Uzma the first service break of the match. But a powerful forehand down the line brought Radhika right back in the ninth game. She held serve to even matters at 5-5.
Uzma, despite a double fault 8212; the first of her three 8212; got the decisive breakthrough in the next game and then ran away with the set at 7-5.
At 2-2, Radhika saved two break points but shot a backhand out which put Uzma up by a break. The Hyderabad girl, who has enough points to play the French Open qualifiers but may not go due to lack of funds, did not look back. A netted shot by Radhika, a Uzma forehand cross-court and another Radhika forehand into the net signalled the end of the Batra Tennis Academy trainee8217;s challenge.
