In a bid to stifle the flow of funds that support terror operations, the United States on Wednesday imposed financial sanctions on four members of Lashkar-e-Toiba LeT militant outfit which is suspected to be behind a number of recent terror attacks in India.
Those against whom the sanctions have been imposed include Mahmoud Bahaziq, Haji Muhammad Ashraf, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, Muhammad Saeed. All four are also top functionaries of the LeT and are key fundraisers for the organisation.
This action by the US Treasury Department will ensure that any asset that these four LeT operatives have under the United States jurisdiction will be frozen. It also prohibits any US citizen from engaging in any financial transactions with these people.
8220;The LeT is a dangerous al-Qaeda affiliate that has demonstrated its willingness to murder innocent civilians,8221; said Stuart Levey, Under Secretary for Tourism and Financial Intelligence, in a statement.
8220;The LeT8217;s transnational nature makes it crucial for governments worldwide to do all they can to stifle its fundraising and operations,8221; he said.
The Pakistan-based terror outfit has been blamed for most of the recent attacks in India including the serial train blasts in Mumbai in 2006, Sarojini Nagar market blasts in New Delhi in 2005 and the attack on Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in December 2005. It is also the prime suspect in the December 2001 attack on the Parliament.
LeT is banned by Pakistan but continues to operate in Kashmir and also in Afghanistan.
