Charging the UPA government of failure in handling foreign affairs, the BJP today asked it to 8220;at least conduct its diplomacy right so that India8217;s interests are not harmed in perpetuity.8221;
BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said the sudden withdrawal of Shashi Tharoor8217;s candidacy, non-passage of nuclear treaty in the US Senate, reduction of India8217;s voting power in IMF and the cancellation of Nepalese Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitoula visit to India were serious set-backs for the country.
He said India committed mistakes in the election for the post of UN Secretary-General at the very outset. He said as a major country, India should have done advance networking with major powers because none of them were nominating its candidate.
When reminded that former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had endorsed Tharoor8217;s candidature and extended his good wishes to him, the BJP spokesman said: 8220;We are not critical of his candidature, we are critical of the manner in which the election was handled8230; It must be noted that the US did not favour India even after the bonhomie which followed the nuclear treaty.8221;
Sitoula, he pointed out, was scheduled to sign the new extradition treaty with India. The issue is important in the light of the fact that ISI operatives are using Nepal for terrorist activities against India.
