
PUNE, AUG 16: At midnight on Friday, Santosh Dastane, controller of examinations, University of Pune, received a hand-delivered suspension order, for 8220;insubordination and inaction in following university orders to lodge a police complaint to investigate the racket of forged marksheets that has dogged the university for almost a year.8221;
Vice-chancellor Dr Arun Nigavekar said at a press conference on Saturday that the reasons for his 8220;insubordination8221; could range from 8220;utter, willful neglect, to probable ulterior motives.8221; The university on Saturday filed a police complaint with the Chatuhrshringi police, details of which were not disclosed.
The Vice-chancellor, who said he has reported the matter to Chancellor Dr P C Alexander, refused to confirm or deny whether the suspension was related to the irregularities in various university examinations that have been exposed lately. The latest scam was regarding unauthorised question papers for the third-year chemical engineering examinations.
Terming this 8220;extreme and hasty8221; step of the university as 8220;a gross injustice,8221; Dastane, who has been on leave since August 1, blamed his inaction partly on procedural delays and also added that he had he had been waiting for complete information of the mark-sheet racket before he filed a police complaint. 8220;As per my knowledge now, no one in the Examination Department is involved in any irregularities,8221; he said. 8220;It is a mistake to say that I did not conduct any enquiries into the irregularities.8221;
8220;Within a week the university will frame a charge-sheet against the accused,8221; said Dr Nigavekar, 8220;This action was considered necessary to maintain the credibility and reputation of the university,8221; he .said.
