Union protests shifting of steel plant

The Steel Plant Bachao Samiti, Sirmour, staged a dharna on Mall Road at Nahan today, halting vehicles on all sides. Earlier, members took out a procession in the main market, to protest the state government8217;s decision to shift the steel plant from Nahan to Kandrori in Kangra district.

They said this would hamper the development of Sirmour district. Members staged a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner Sirmour, and submitted a memorandum.

Chairman of the Samiti Jasmat Singh said Steel Authority of India SAIL had sanctioned the steel plant for Sirmour, and it should not be shifted to Kangra.

The Samiti would start a chain hunger strike to protest the move, he said.
