BHOPAL, MAY 7: BJP MP Uma Bharti today called off her indefinite hunger strike in protest against the retrenchment of daily wage employees of the Madhya Pradesh government.

The surprise decision to call off the fast on its seventh day was taken by Bharti on a request by a committee set up to decide the course of action which the agitation would take.

The committee members include state BJP vice-president Babulal Gaur, former minister Laxmi Narayan Sharma, former Bhopal mayor Uma Shanker Gupta, two local journalists and leaders of the daily wage employees.

The local MP broke her fast by accepting a glass of juice from the mother of Sunil, a daily wage employee who is said to have taken his life after losing his job.

Gupta told reporters after Bharti ended the hunger strike that the committee had decided to ask her to call off her fast in view of the quot;attitude of the Chief Minister Digvijay Singh during talks held earlier in the dayquot;.

Gupta said though the Chief Minister agreed to consider two demands put forward by Bharti, he did not give an assurance on reinstating retrenched daily wage employees.
