NAGPUR, Aug 12: Shekhar Mate, a junior clerk with the Nagpur University, and Haridas Shende, proprietor of a local education society, who were held on Tuesday in connection with the bogus degree scam, were on Wednesday remanded to police custody till August 17.

The duo, produced in the court on Wednesday by the Sitabuldi police, face charges of helping a BAMS student, Sameer Dasgupta, procure a bogus degree certificate for the year 1990. Dasgupta, held earlier in Mumbai and brought here, is already in police custody remand till August 16.

Haridas claimed before the police that he had studied DHMS course and was the proprietor of Vishal Multipurpose Educational Society.

Investigators continued to grill various engineering students, who were summoned at the Sitabuldi police station and are under suspicion of deriving benefits from the perpetrators of the scandal.
