America and the world mourned Paul Newman on Sunday, with co-star and long-time friend Robert Redford leading a flood of moving tributes to the Hollywood icon and philanthropist.

Family and friends of the actor remembered a loving family man and passionate humanitarian who, in an oft-repeated phrase, had lived an 8220;exemplary life.8221;

Robert Redford, 72, who starred with Newman in beloved Hollywood classics Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, said in a statement: 8220;There is a point where feelings go beyond words.8221; 8220;I have lost a real friend,8221; he added. 8220;My life 8212; and this country 8212; is better for his being in it.8221;

Newman8217;s daughters cited the 8220;selfless humility and generosity8221; that characterised their father8217;s life. 8220;Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles,8221; the statement read.

8220;But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee. Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather. Dedicated philanthropist.8221;

George Clooney said: 8220;He set the bar too high for the rest of us. Not just actors, but all of us.8221;

Actress Julia Roberts, who was involved in Newman8217;s camps for sick children, told People Magazine: 8220;He was my hero.8221;

Sally Field, Newman8217;s co-star in the 1981 drama Absence of Malice, added: 8220;Sometimes God makes perfect people and Paul Newman was one of them.8221;

Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton also praised Newman8217;s generosity. 8220;Paul was an American icon, philanthropist and champion for children,8221; the Clintons said in a statement.
