The Rajasthan education minister does not seem to have an elementary understanding of the connection between a language and one8217;s culture, religion, and social and political ethos 8216;To this RSS minister, English makes perfect Parivar sense8217;, IE, July 24. Language is the prime vehicle which enables a child to learn, understand, assimilate and imbibe one8217;s culture, traditions, behavioral patterns and religious spirit. This thus enables the child to communicate her/his inner feelings, emotions, needs, aspirations peculiar to cultural, religious, and social needs. Learning more languages can certainly be useful, if additional languages are learnt 8220;after8221; a child has already imbibed the essentials of her/his own identity through her/his languages. In India, where there are more than 18 major languages, it is more important to ensure that all children first learn their own mother tongue.

8226; English links India and also keeps open our window to the outside world. Let it continue to do what it is doing. Thanks to the minister for trying to open our eyes!

Hues of terror
8226; Iraq is different from Kashmir 8216;Don8217;t feed the terror8217;, IE, July 26. Say what you may, but the Al-Qaeda is focussed on the US at the moment. In fact, these kidnappings give India the excuse it needs for not supplying troops for the Anglo-American occupation. I suspect this is what other countries are doing as well. These countries need some excuse to get out of Iraq and let the US handle the mess. They are not capitulating to terrorists. They would never negotiate with terrorists in their own countries. India must differentiate clearly between Iraq and Kashmir.

Bandh blues
8226; Kudos to A. Padamsee and B.G. Deshmukh for approaching the high court and helping ensure punishment to political parties for causing losses to the exchequer and untold misery to the common man 8216;HC asks Sena, BJP to pay up for bandh8217;, IE, July 24.

A larger problem
8226; Nira Ramachandran8217;s suggestions to keep our villages hunger free are only part of the solution 8216;Child sacrifices of the season8217;, IE, July 21. This would remain a pipe dream if we miss the larger picture of the population explosion. As long as that subject is out of our minds, we cannot have hunger free villages. Tough decisions are needed.

Third umpire
8226; Yes, Azharuddin8217;s case should be settled urgently 8216;Kapil Dev bats for Azharuddin8217;, IE, July 21. It is a pity that such an intelligent cricketer has had to suffer so long for his mistakes. Some solution should be found. Azhar is a very humble and down-to-earth man. It is a pity that our system allows persons accused of various crimes to be inducted in councils of ministers, whereas someone like Azhar is made to suffer on account of unproven charges.
