Jagannath Singh Dilip Kumar is dead. But for the people whom he has tormented throughout his life, he8217;s still alive. His wife Suman Smita Jaykar who he had thrown out of his haveli when she was carrying his son in her womb, now lives in a basti and shudders to think about the man. His son Amar Mukul Dev, a truck driver, hates him. Amar is in love with Neeta Mamta Kulkarni the daughter of the truck owner, Ghanya Seth Satish Kaushik.

Jagannath8217;s death brings his twin brother, judge Amarnath Singh Dilip Kumar to his sister-in-law and nephew. At the funeral, the family comes across Yamini Rekha and her crippled brother Kundan Malay Chakravarty who spits abuse at Jagannath8217;s funeral pyre.

The judge brings all these grieved people under his roof where he lives with his daughter Lajo Rajeshwari. He wants to live happily with them and tries to mend hisbrother8217;s misdeeds. But suddenly the evidence in his brother8217;s murder starts building up. And Amarnath realises that one of these people 8212; who have been wronged by his brother 8212; has murdered the man. The honest and upright judge is forced to look into the evidence and probe the murder 8212; even as he tries to save his family. An interesting plot, if nothing else.

The story revolves around two small-time crooks who have dreams of hitting the big time, preferably by a method which does not require too much hard work. Besides relying on an old plot which has worked before, the film is also banking on the pair of Akshay Kumar Dev and Saif Ali Khan Ajay, which has bought in the bucks before at the box-office. Since alone, both of them can8217;t seem to draw in the audiences, maybe the funda of two is better than one will work. Among their hackneyedmoney-making schemes is to hook a rich girl. Ajay starts chasing Sharmilee Raveena Tandon who is actually another crook and who falls for Dev instead. The turning point in their lives is when Ajay picks a young man8217;s pocket. The man, Mohan Ravi Kissan tries to catch Ajay. During the chase a truck knocks Mohan down and he dies. On opening the wallet Ajay and Dev find a letter and they realise how important that money was for Mohan8217;s family. So they decide to go to Mohan8217;s house in a remote village of Badlapur to return the money.

On reaching Badlapur they meet Mohan8217;s father Dinanath Tripathi Anupam Kher who is a school master and Mohan8217;s mother Moushami Chatterjee is so sweet and loving that you need to take insulin injections to the theatre if you want to get through this film. The pair lie to the family that Mohan is still alive but busy with exams and pretend to be his friends. An honest school-master and a tyrannical zamindar go together like the God and the Devil. Shakti Kapoor plays crueltypersonified and the the dirty duo turn crusading warriors to rescue the village from a fate of oppression. The usual village romance and the tearful climax also follow.
