The telecom regulator has asked telcos to report their international long distance traffic minutes to it on a monthly basis. This, Trai says, will check grey market calls, since any variance of two per cent or more in the incoming or outgoing traffic of an ILD operator will invite vigilance checks.

These decisions have approval of an Expert Group consisting of Department of Telecom8217;s vigilance and licensing cells, the Telecom Engineering Centre TEC, International Long Distance Operators ILDOs and Trai.

The group has decided that the two per cent system will be a suitable mechanism to ensure consistency of ILD traffic minutes. On Thursday, the regulator therefore issued directions to all Access Providers, NLDOs and ILDOs that they should submit traffic minutes on a monthly basis starting January, 2006.

8216;8216;Any provider whose traffic goes above two per cent will be investigated. All cases of variance of more than two per cent in a particular month will have to be reported,8217;8217; Trai said in a statement on Friday.

To check the consistency of inbound and outbound ILD minutes, seven formats for submission of the data have been finalised by the Expert Group for providing details of the ILD traffic minutes.
