90 minutes in 30 words: There was little to write home about in this match and it was nothing short of a disaster for both teams.Spain must now beat Bulgaria and hope that Paraguay do not lose against Nigeria in order to reach the second round. Spain failed to show much invention in attack and although Paraguay came close in the 68th minute with a fierce shot neither side looked ready to make theirmark in the later stages.
Boy done good: Tough one this. Jose Luis Chilavert producedone of the saves of the tournament for Paraguay when he got his hand to a cracking shot from Gonzalez Raul.
Two left feet: Juan Antonio Pizzi, for failing to get to the rebound after Chilavert had saved Raul8217;s shot.
Magic moment: Paraguayan 8216;keeper Chilavert again for moving upfield to take one of his trademark free kicks, only to see it rebound off the wall.
Mr Sitter: The Spanish team for wasting the three-point potential of this game.
Shiver the timbers: In the 65th minute Miguel Benitez of Paraguay hit Andoni Zubizarreta8217;s near post after attempting to find an angle that didn8217;t exist.
Cheered: Another tough one. Paraguayan supporters showed an appreciation of effort made in the 64th minute when Benitez8217; fine curling shot was only just kept out by Zubizarreta.
Jeered: The Spanish team at the end.
Turning point: The end of the first half during which Spain had failed to assert themselves.From then on one could almost sense that they were headingfor the mire.
Ref-er-ee!: The fact that no red cards and only four yellow cards were issued means, in the current climate, that this has to go down as an outstanding game for Fifa8217;s grim reaper.
Terrace talk: Paraguay: If we can8217;t beat Spain what hope dowe have against Nigeria?
Spain: Why did Abacha have to die now?
Group D: Nigeria 1 Belgium 0
Goals: Nigeria: Ikpeba 26
Bookings: Bulgaria: Ilian Iliev 65th, Radostin Kichichev 79th; Nigeria: Mutiu Adepoju 20th, Uche Okechukwu 43rd, Victor Ikpeba 49th, Augustine Okocha 72nd
90 minutes in 30 words: Not the titanic contest of last Saturday, but Nigeria saw off Bulgaria with the odd dash of skill and a defensive performance which was more than competent. The Super Eagles are through to the second round, and they will be a tough team to beat.
Boy done good: Mutiu Adepoju. Along with Taribo West, Adepoju formed Nigeria8217;s central defensive axis. But while West can be occasionallyclumsy, Adepoju never lost his position or committed himself unduly. In the second half especially, he was a one-man defence.
Two left feet: Trifon Ivanov. The man who looks more like an organised criminal than anyone else in the World Cup, played like one today. His distribution was terrible, and his tackles were easily avoided by the likes of Okocha and Ikpeba.
Magic moment: The goal which decided the tie was the culmination of a sweet move around Bulgaria8217;s 18 yard box. Jay Jay Okocha slipped a pass from the right hand side into Daniel Amokachi on the penalty spot. With an instant pass, he flicked the ball into the path of Victor Ikpeba, who evaded the attentions of Trifan Ivanov and slipped the ball into the net.
Mr Sitter: After being completely outplayed in the first half, Bulgaria had their chances in the second the best of which fell to the usually reliable Hristo Stoichkov. A pass from Krasimir Balakov on the left-hand side of the Nigerian area, found Stoichkov unmarked sixyards out. But the Barcelona man could only make partial contact with the ball and steered it wide of the post.
Shiver the timbers: Emile Kostadinov skimmed the Nigerian bar with a cross-cum-shot that eluded the entire Nigerian defence.
Cheered: The arrival of Nwankwo Kanu, the golden boy whose career was nearly ended by heart surgery, received a massive cheer from the Nigerian fans.
Jeered: Very little. Compared to yesterday8217;s drama there wasn8217;t a lot to complain about.
Turning point: Ikpeba8217;s goal. Thereafter, the Super Eagles were content to sit back, Italian style, and soak up anything the Bulgarians could throw at them.
Ref-er-ee!: The Chilean Sanchez Yanten was remarkably restrained. He even managed to notice when the likes of Stoichkov were going to ground a tad too easily.
Terrace talk: Bulgaria: quot;It8217;s true. They are too old.quot;
Nigeria: quot; We8217;re going to win the World Cup. As long as we don8217;t play any really good teams.quot;
