
Nepalese security personnel have arrested the leader of a powerful student organisation and conducted overnight raids on some media outlets ahead of today8217;s major protest rally as part of the 8216;Black Day8217; being observed by pro-democracy parties to mark the anniversary of King Gyanendra8217;s power grab.
Khimlal Bhattarai, president of All Nepal National Free Students Organisation ANNFSU was arrested in Kathmandu by policemen on Monday while returning home after attending a protest rally at Indrachowk in Kathmandu, student sources said.
The eight student organisations affiliated decided to install black flags in colleges across Nepal today and organise protest rallies. The police raided both Narayani Daily at Maisthan in Birgunj. Palpa-based daily Srinagar8217;s chief Bhimsen Karki and Station Manager Jagdish Bhattarai were briefly detained on charges of airing the news of Maoist rebels8217; call for boycotting the municipal polls.
The government has ordered 90-day detention to Nepali Congress leaders Eknath Ranabhat and Tek Prasad Gurung and two Nepal Students Union activists. 8212; PTI
