The Crime Branch of the city police today arrested the daughter of prominent industrialist Obul Reddy on charges of cheating nearly 70 luxury car owners by hiring their vehicles and failing to pay them nearly Rs 75 lakh.

Meenakshi Reddy 50 was arrested today under Sections 406 criminal breach of trust and 420 cheating r/w 120 B of the IPC and remanded in judicial custody.

Meenakshi was arrested based on complaints from more than 30 car owners that she had hired their cars, but failed to pay them the promised hire charges and had also refused to return their vehicles. According to the police complaint, Meenakshi had 8220;induced8217;8217; 69 car owners of such makes as Honda City, Innova, Bolero, Scorpio, Qualis, Skoda, Hyundai Accent and Tata Indica to entrust their vehicles with her under 8220;false representation8217;8217; that she would make payments of rental charges every month. Meenakshi, who had been doing this 8220;business8217;8217; for about four years, did not pay the monthly charges to the car owners and had, in some cases, sub-let the cars to other taxi services, police said.

According to L Pandian, the first to make a complaint before the police in March this year, Meenakshi had approached him last year saying she needed a car urgently for a guest. 8220;She said she would pay the hire charges every month,8217;8217; said Pandian, adding, that he had subsequently lent her 11 cars, including some belonging to his friends.

But after a couple of months, Meenakhsi failed to keep her commitment and did not return the cars, he alleged. There are also charges that Meenakshi had mortgaged the cars and in some cases even sold car parts, replacing them with duplicate parts. However, Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dharmaraj, said he did not have any evidence for such allegations. Twenty cars have been seized so far.

Police said Meenakshi had been operating on her own and had no business links with her father, Obul Reddy, a well-known name in home appliances and a director of Apollo Hospitals and managing director of Nippon Batteries.
